Yagya or Havan is the most simple and effective way to tap the unlimited power of nature. Havan has a positive scientific basis. To stay alive, we need oxygen from the environment which is called ‘Pran Vayu’ in the Vedas. It is our duty to maintain a favorable and oxygen-rich atmosphere as an unfavorable atmosphere can destroy all life.
To rid the atmosphere of impurities, two systems were developed in the Rig Vedic Era – Yagya (Havan) and Planting of medicinal herbs. The provision of Havan is to purify the atmosphere of poisonous gases. This was said to be the most important task in Vedic times. It is important now for the whole world to recognize the scientific basis of Yagya or Havan. To purify the air, Hawan must be performed with the offering of aromatic substances so that the pure form of environment can be protected.
“अयं यज्ञोः विश्वस्य भुवनस्य नाभिः”
In Yajurveda, Havan is said to be the Naabhi (nucleus) of the entire world. Just like Naabhi has an important place in the Human body, so is the role of Yagya in this world. Air does the task of spreading the fumes created by Havan in the same way as the veins and channels spread the various elements in the body.
Four types of substances are usually added to a Yagya:
Western Scientists have done numerous experiments in the field of air-purification and extolled the virtues of Yagya. Agnihotra University has been established in Germany specifically to carry out research in this field. Following are the Conclusions of Scientists around the world on this subject:
1. According to French Scientist ‘Tilvert’, burning sugar has huge potential to purify the air. It instantly destroys bacteria that cause Decay, Measles, and Cholera etc.
2. When Dr. M. Trelt, experimented with burning Raisins etc, he discovered that the fumes were capable of destroying bacteria that causes typhoid in 30 minutes and other disease-causing bacteria in a couple of hours.
3. Dr. Haffkine of France has said that Cow’s ghee added to a Havan kills disease-producing germs.
New research has proven that Havan with 10 grams of cow’s ghee can produce tonnes of oxygen. American Psychologist Barry Rathner who conducted extensive research on ‘Agnihotra’ in Pune University has said that Agnihotra (Fire Ceremony) has a distinctive effect on the environment and a healing effect on the human mind. There is a clear discussion on that healing effect in Ayurveda.
In the Hindustan Times publication of 7 May, 7 1999, a news article by Rahul Karmakar of Lucknow established that the Indian system of Yagya based on Vedic philosophy, is not a mere burning of few yogic substances but actually destroys the harmful gases of Sulphur dioxide and Nitrous oxide present in the air and also kills germs present in water.
We must perform Yagya on a regular basis if we want people and animals/birds in our home or environment to benefit. In the current modern lifestyle, however, it is very difficult for working people to find the time and dedicate an entire day to the due diligence of a Yagya. For such people, there is a provision of a shorter version of Yagya or Havan, which can be done without much ado in less than an hour’s time in an iron or copper container easily available in the market. This is the best procedure considering the current lifestyle and circumstances. You can choose a capable Pundit if the Havan is for a specific purpose but if you want to perform the Havan for your family members or inhabitants at home then the procedure is extremely simple:
Time: Between 7am – 9am
Place: The place should ideally be the Centre of the house.
Clean and mop the place well. Then sit either facing the East or North direction (East for worldly goals and North for spiritual). Keep the Havan Kund in front of you and use only dry Peepal, Mango or Dhak (Flame of the forest) wood. Other woods produce gases that have a negative effect on the mind and body. Heat a cow-dung cake on the gas till just before it starts releasing smoke. Keep this in the Havan Kund and put the wood on top. Then keep 1-2 pieces of camphor and light with a match. Now perform the Havan with Cow’s ghee and Havan samagri (material).
Mantras for Havan:
You can choose the mantras as per your wish. After chanting the Mantra, recite ‘Swaha’ and add some Ghee and Havan Samagri.
